The tiny stature of the chassis makes its build quality that much more impressive. That makes the Surface Laptop 4 the slimmest 15-inch laptop you can buy. It’s still an accomplishment, though - the similarly configured LG Gram 16, for example, is still a larger 0.66 inches thick. Because the Surface Laptop 4 doesn’t support discrete graphics or 45-watt processors, Microsoft’s able to go razor-thin. Of course, those laptops have larger chassis to support the extra performance you can configure. That’s especially true if you’re used to thicker laptops in this category such as the Dell XPS 15 (0.71 inches thick) or MacBook Pro 16-inch (0.64 inches thick). That thinness is really noticeable in the palm rests, which are barely raised off the table. It’s still as remarkably thin as ever at just 0.58 inches for the 15-inch model.
All of those things are still intact with the Surface Laptop 4, which leaves the chassis relatively unchanged. There are many things to adore about the design of the Surface Laptop - even in 2021. Sure, the Surface Laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor can handle video editing, but it's not a pleasant experience compared to laptops with stronger specifications. To squeeze out the most performance, it's best to project to the external monitor only, instead of extending and using the Surface Laptop's display along with the external monitor. The Surface Laptop has a mini DisplayPort instead of the newer USB Type-C port, but it works fine as long as you have the right cable. When editing videos from home, I usually connect my machine to an external 4K monitor. Playing the finished video isn't a problem at all on the Surface Laptop. For comparison, the Razer Blade with GTX 1060 graphics card and HP ZBook Studio with NVIDIA Quadro M1200 take about 4 minutes to export the same project. A sample 2-minute 4K video shot with the Sony a7S II takes about 25 minutes to export.
